Tummy Tuck
TUMMY TUCK/ABDOMINOPLASTY
Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a “tummy tuck”, is a surgical procedure done to remove excess skin and fat from the lower abdomen and tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall. This surgery produces consistent dramatic results.
If you are considering abdominoplasty, a consultation with Dr. Ward will help determine if you are a candidate and the results you can expect. In this consultation, Phoenix tummy tuck specialist Dr. Ward, will examine your abdominal region and carefully assess the quality of your abdominal wall, muscles, and skin. Most patients who undergo a tummy tuck procedure are ecstatic with their firmer, more toned midsections and improved postures. Many enjoy a new sense of self-confidence, as well as a wider selection of wardrobe options and activities! Although abdominoplasty results are considered permanent, healthy diet and regular exercise are vital to maintaining the new figure.

THE BEST CANDIDATES FOR TUMMY TUCK
Ideal candidates for abdominoplasty are men and women who are in good physical health and at a stable weight. They usually have been unsuccessful in toning their abdominal regions, even with the help of healthy diets and exercise programs. Ideal candidates are non-smokers who do not plan on future pregnancies. All patients should communicate their aesthetic goals to Dr. Ward in forming realistic expectations. This surgery is very popular for women who have experienced multiple pregnancies and have stretched their abdominal skin and weakened their abdominal muscles. Commonly, the post-pregnancy tummy tuck is performed in conjunction with other procedures, generally referred to as the "Mommy Makeover".
Prior to Surgery
Dr. Ward may require blood work, chest x-ray and an EKG to make sure you are healthy enough to have anesthesia and that there are not any underlying bleeding risks that may cause complications. The day before surgery you will come to the office and bring with you your ideal underwear or a swimsuit to allow Dr. Ward to mark the placement of the scar (how low or high you want the incision). In doing so this insures the placement of the scar is well hidden even with low cut bikinis. After surgery, the scar is treated with scar cream greatly advancing the fading process of the scar. Often patients have found that the flatter, tighter tummy is well worth the scar from the procedure.
EXPLANATION OF THE SURGERY
A full tummy tuck usually takes about two to three hours for Dr. Ward to perform under general anesthesia. During an abdominoplasty, Dr. Ward will first make an incision that extends from hip to hip along the lower pubic area. (Skilled surgeons are able to create incisions that can easily hide below a bikini bottom). The loose skin is lifted off of the abdominal wall, exposing the vertical abdominal muscles which are stitched into a new position, tightening the muscles, and thus flattening the stomach and reducing the waistline. Next, excess skin is stretched and removed. The remaining skin is re-draped over the abdominal area and sutured in place. The umbilicus (belly button), which is released from the abdominal skin flap, is finally re-attached proportionally to the new, flatter stomach area.
RECOVERY
Bandages and dressings will be applied to your incision sites, and you will be wrapped with compression garments after your tummy tuck procedure. A small, thin tube will also be temporarily placed to drain any excess blood or fluids that may accumulate. You will experience swelling, minor discomfort, and sometimes the inability to stand fully upright during the first 2 weeks. Most patients require one to two weeks before returning to work and their normal activities. Although you should be able to appreciate your new slimmer profile in just a couple weeks, it may take up to 3 months before final contours are realized. Dr. Ward and his staff will provide you with specific instructions on the care of your incision sites, appropriate post-surgical exercise, as well as prescribe the necessary oral medications for pain management, expedited healing, and infection prevention.
